On May of 2012, Dana Sedgewick decided to trim her bikini line along with her legs. It was a normal routine for her, and nothing was out of the ordinary. She then noticed a small, bleeding pimple but chose to brush it off.
‘I didn’t think anything of it as I often got a rash from shaving.”
Apparently, the pimple developed into necrotizing fasciitis, a flesh-eating infection. A doctor prescribed her antibiotics, which she took diligently. However, it was after a few days that her eldest daughter, Megan, found her lying in bed, with her legs covered in a bloody, red rash.
Dana recalled, “By the time I got to the hospital, my legs were covered in black, rotting flesh. It was touch-and-go as to whether I’d make it.”
But the worst thing happened, Dana develops sepsis and doctor gave her just a 30 percent chance of survival after going into septic shock. Dana’s kidneys failed, while her heart stopped four times.
The doctor then asked her if she remembers shaving prior to the infection. She then recalled that two days after shaving, she felt dizziness and nausea. Apparently, she had a small pimple on her groin, which was cut by the razor. She ignored the small, bleeding pimple, which worsened after a few days.
When doctors removed the bandages around her legs, she was able to see what had happened for the first time. It was traumatic and horrific for Dana to see.
She said: ‘It was horrific. All of my muscle had rotted away, and I had a crater of skin near my groin. I felt like I was going to throw up. But I knew that it could have been much, much worse. I could easily have lost my legs – or worse, died.’
Now, Danas has fully recovered with the support of her husband, Mathew, 47, and is back at home with her children—Megan, 18, Freya, 14, and Klara, 9.
Her story has been widespread in the internet, to warn other women (and men) who shave and ignore small, bleeding pimples which can cause a deadly infection.
