Over 200,000 jobs up for grabs on Labor Day job fairs
Jobseekers can go to any of the 55 job fairs to be conducted simultaneously around the country on May 1, Labor Day, and try their luck on the over 200,000 jobs available both locally and overseas.

The Trabaho, Negosyo, Kabuhayan (TNK) job fairs will have 201,811 total vacancies — 3,422 in the government; 69,944 in local companies; and 128,445 overseas, according to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

About 1,037 participating employers — eight government agencies, 801 local companies, and 228 overseas firms — will be present in the job fairs.

Occupations with the most amount of local vacancies include production machine operators, customer service representatives, and police officers (PO1).

Laborers, cleaners, service crews, electricians, professional nurses, and factory workers are the most in-demand professions overseas.
Job mismatch
At a press briefing on Wednesday, Labor Assistant Secretary Alex Avila said 20 percent or one out of five applicants in previous job fairs managed to get hired on the spot.

"May tinatawag ring hired on the spot na dun pa lang mismo sa job fair site ay hired na," Avila said.

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said one of the biggest reason for the high number of vacancies — and the country's 6.57 percent unemployment rate — is job mismatch caused by a lack of training.

Bello and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Sec. Guiling Mamondiong met on Tuesday morning to "fast-track" the training of skilled workers such as construction workers and plumbers, among others, to fill vacancies.

"Ang problema natin actually is job matching. Maraming available employments kaya lang maraming naga-apply na hindi nila ma-meet yung job na available," Bello said.

"Malaking bagay 'yan 'pag na-solve natin yung job mismatch," he added.

"Workers should adapt"

While Bello is aware that demands for certain occupancies vary, he encouraged workers to see which jobs are in demand and to focus on these opportunities.

"Kasi yung jobs emanate from business. Kailangan, ang adaptation should come from the workers. Sila dapat ang tumingin kung saan ang prospect. Knowing the availability of the work, dun ka na dapat mag-focus," he said.

Future construction projects by the government also aim to provide at least two million jobs that are envisioned to knock the unemployment rate down to three percent.

"The president will create not less than two million jobs by way of implementing billions-worth of construction activities. Yun ang isang paraan na matutugunan yung unemployment rate natin," Bello said.

"Sigurado tayo na malaki ang ibabawas niyan sa unemployment rate na 'yan," he added. "We are expecting a reduction of unemployment rate from 6.5 to maximum of three percent na lang."

Contractualization
Bello also claimed that various food chains in hot water for contractualization have promised to gradually regularize their employees.

"Yung commitment ng many of our food chain establishment to now cooperate with the government and regularize their employees," he said.

Apart from TNK job fairs, other Labor Day activities that will be held at Davao City include raffles with prizes from the Home Development Mutual Fund (HDMF), Philippine Overseas Employment Agency (POEA), Overseas Workers Welfare Agency (OWWA), and Employees' Compensation Commission (ECC).

HDMF will raffle away a house and lot to participants of the Labor Day event and P1 million to the winner of their Dagdag-Ipon Raffle Promo.
OWWA, POEA, and ECC will raffle off 15 tricycle units.

DOLE Clinics will also be held prior to the May 1 celebrations on April 29 to give workers pre-employment assistance, labor standards enforcement, dispute resolution, and livelihood assistance.

President Rodrigo Duterte will preside over the ceremony at the People's Park in Davao City on May 1.
