“In the case of Sen. De Lima, TIME conveniently failed to clarify that she was jailed not for her criticisms against the administration but because an independent court found probable cause in support of the criminal charges against her for alleged violation of the law on illegal drugs,” presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said in a statement to reporters.
De Lima’s writeup was written by former United States Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power who said that the senator’s imprisonment was a “disturbing testament to the current solidarity among strongmen and the global surge in impunity.”
TIME placed De Lima under the “icons” list.
Honored 2 write @TIME 100 piece on brave Philippine human arts hero Leila de Lima. Amazed by @AttyLeila jail journal https://t.co/ES20V3168cPresident Rodrigo Duterte also made it to the list under the “leaders” category. His profile was written by former Colombian President César Gaviria, who previously warned Duterte not to repeat his mistakes in the drug war. Duterte called him an idiot in response.

In his TIME writeup for Duterte, Gaviria said that many would die if the Philippine president would fail to confront the drug problem as a health, human rights, and development issue.
Despite Gaviria's thoughts on the Philippines' war on drugs, Abella said Duterte still enjoys the trust and confidence of the Filipinos.
"The fact remains that President Duterte is supported by majority of the Filipinos in his campaign against illegal hard drugs, crime and corruption," he said.
