Senator Leila de Lima said she is “relieved” upon hearing news that the public satisfaction with President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs dropped in a recent survey.
In a handwritten note from her detention facility in Camp Crame, De Lima said the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) poll is a “very significant (and relieving) development.”
“Ibig sabihin, dumadami na ang mga kababayan natin na namumulat sa katotohanan na mali ang pamamaraan ng Pangulong Duterte sa pagsugpo sa problema sa droga,” De Lima said.
“Summary killing of suspected drug offenders irrespective of their guilt, is absolutely wrong, hence, unacceptable. It is against the laws of men and of God,” she said.
De Lima is presently detained at the PNP Custodial Center in Camp Crame over her alleged involvement in illegal drug trade inside the national penitentiary when she was still secretary of Justice.
De Lima, a staunch critic of the Duterte, said the number of “collateral damage” has made the phenomenon of extrajudicial killings (EJKs) “more reprehensible.”
“Those who advocate for, encourage and effectuate this extreme solution distort people's sense of right and wrong and destroy the very moral fabric of our society. To me, they are the real enemies of the people. Let us reject and fight them,” she said.
The survey conducted March 25 to 28 showed that net satisfaction with the anti-drug campaign is now at a “very good” +66, 11 points and a grade lower than the “excellent” +77 it received in December last year.
Of this number, 78 percent of respondents said they were satisfied with the Duterte administration anti-drug war, seven points lower from December.
PNP chief Director General Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa earlier blamed the media for using the term “EJK” as he stressed that the recent killings are not “state-sponsored.”
"Kalimutan niyo ang EJK. Huwag niyo gamitin iyan. Hindi naman talaga sponsored ng state 'yung killing na 'yan e. Hindi sponsored ng PNP, in fact," Dela Rosa said.
