The project, which has been described by a local newspaper as the “pet project of Vice President Leni Robredo” and the local government unit, was supposed to “revive the Naga River and to provide convenience for the devotees during the annual Penafrancia Fiesta fluvial procession.”
But with this development, there is already talks among the locals about a need for an investigation as to the cause of the collapse.
According to the report of the Bicol Standard, one of the persons they interviewed had already indicated earlier “that the foundation was very shallow, and the plastering of the rip-rap was too thin.”
The newspaper has also reported that Diego Magpantay, a representative of the Citizens Crime Watch will be sending a group of investigators “to conduct an impartial documentation of the incident.”
Magpantay has promised that “they would not hesitate to initiate the necessary complaint against those responsible” if anomalies are discovered.
